Description

Mixing concentrated formic acid with concentrated sulfuric acid can result in the generation of carbon monoxide.


 

Situations where encountered:

(1) suicide attempt, with intentional mixing usually done in a closed room

(2) accidental, either industrial or laboratory

 

The presence of concentrated acid vapors also can cause severe lung injury.

 

A person responding to the exposure may be at significant risk if not wearing the appropriate respirator and if the incident occurs in a poorly ventilated enclosed space.
