The Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) can be used to assess a person's perceived coping ability when faced with a chronic condition. The scale is independent of age and health status. It is also available in at least 9 languages, permitting international comparisons.
The instrument consists of 10 items related to the person's ability to cope with a chronic medical condition.
