Description

OSHA requires that workers be protected from hazards that have been identified in the workplace. If an identified hazard cannot be eliminated in some way then personal protective equipment (PPE) must be provided.


Interventions that can reduce risk:

(1) engineering controls

(2) administrative controls

 

Engineering controls:

(1) substitution in chemicals or materials

(2) substitution in machinery or equipment

(3) installation of protective systems

 

Administrative controls:

(1) written policies and procedures

(2) supervision

(3) training

(4) scheduling

(5) cleaning and policing the worksite

 

If there is residual hazard after all possible interventions then PPE must be provided.
