Description

The Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) may issue citations for rule violations. These can be classified based on severity and other factors.


Parameters:

(1) severity of injury

(2) employer's attitude

(3) employer's history of previous citation(s)

(4) employer's abatement of previous citation

not likely to cause serious physical harm or death

other than serious

substantial probability of causing serious physical injury or death

serious

employer EITHER knowingly failed to comply with a legal requirement OR acted in plain indifference to worker safety

willful

previous OSHA citation for the same or substantially similar violation within the past 5 years

repeat

failure to correct a documented violation

failure to abate

 

The legal consequences and economic impacts tend to increase as the citation severity increases.
