Description

The presence of interstitial gas can rarely be found in the penis.


Features:

(1) palpable crepitus in penis and usually also in scrotum

(2) gas bubbles are seen in the genitalia on imaging studies

(3) findings related to cause

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) gas gangrene or necrotizing gangrene

(2) penetrating trauma

(3) iatrogenic especially laparoscopic surgery with insufflation of the abdomen

(4) injections into the penis

(5) rupture of a gas filled penile prosthesis
