Description

The presence of gas in one or more joints can be a manifestation of acute decompression sickness. Jitsuiki et al described its appearance on CY imagery. The authors are from Shizuoka Hospital in Japan.


Patient selection: recent diving or other dysbaric exposure

 

Clinical presentation:

(1) painful joints

(2) fatigue, rash and other signs of decompression sickness

 

CT or US scans may show gas within joints of painful joints. Gas bubbles may also be detected in and around internal organs.

 

The presence of intramedullary gas may precede dysbaric osteonecrosis.
