Description

A garbage dump or landfill contains a wide range of materials. These may result in a number of problems such as fire that can be persistent for months or longer.

Conditions make a garbage dump or landfill favorable for fire:

(1) combustible materials such as paper, cardboard and wood

(2) release of methane or other flammable gases from decaying materials

(3) presence of flammable liquids such as gasoline or cooking oil

Fire can occur from many sources (lightning, arson, 9 volt batteries, or other source).

Once a fire starts it can extend to all parts of the dump or landfill. Burning can go on for weeks or months. Putting a fire out completely can be difficult, especially for a massive site.

Complications from fire:

(1) smoke, which may be toxic

(2) structural collapse as contents are consumed
