The presence of PAX-FOXO1 fusion genes in a patient with rhabdomyosarcoma has implications for prognosis.
Types of PAX-FOXO1 translocations that can occur in alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma:
(1) PAX3 (2q35) and FOXO1 (13q14) = t(2;13)(q35;q14) = P3F+
(2) PAX7 (1p36) and FOXO1 (13q14) = t(1;13)(p36;q14) = P7F+
Histologic Type
Fusion Gene
alveolar
PAX3-FOXO1
PAX7-FOXO1
none (ARMSn)
embryonal
NA
The overall survival for a patient with an alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma with a fusion gene was poor (worse for PAX3-FOXO1).
The overall survival for alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma without a fusion gene is similar to embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma provided it is adequately treated.
