Description

Different species of Fusarium can contaminate cereal grains with a variety of mycotoxins. The resulting intoxication is called Fusariosis.


 

Synonym: alimentary toxic aleukeia (USSR), akakabi-byo (Japan)

 

Mycotoxins produced by various Fusarium species:

(1) zearalenone

(2) trichothecenes

 

Cereal grains affected: primarily corn and wheat, also sorghum and barley

 

Clinical features of Fusariosis:

(1) gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bleeding)

(2) muscle weakness or myasthenic symptoms

(3) aplastic anemia
