Description

Poonnoose et al developed the Functional Independence Score in Hemophilia (FISH) to evaluate impairment in patients with hemophilia. This can be used to monitor performance over time. The authors are from the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India.

Performance measures:

(1) eating and grooming

(2) bathing

(3) dressing

(4) transfer to and from chair

(5) squatting

(6) walking

(7) step or stair climbing

Performance

Points

unable or needs complete assistance

1

partially able with assistance, device or proper environment

2

able to perform without assistance or assistive aid but with effort or discomfort

3

normal

4

where:

• Eating and grooming are upper extremity and coordination activities.

• A more straightforward scoring system is grading from 0 to 3.

• Squatting may not be a common activity for some, and bending over or toileting may be a better measure.

subscore for self-care =

= (points for eating and grooming) + (points for bathing) + (points for dressing)

subscore for transfers =

= (points for chair transfer) + (points for squatting)

subscore for locomotion =

= (points for walking) + (points for step climbing)

total score =

= SUM(points for all 7 measures)

percent of normal activity =

= ((total score) - 7) / 21

Interpretation:

• minimum total score: 7

• maximum total score: 28

• The higher the score the better the person's functional ability.
