Fulminant toxoplasmosis is a rapidly progressive infection that can be fatal.
Features of fulminant toxoplasmosis:
(1) rapidly progressive
(2) poor response to appropriate therapy, especially if delayed
(3) organ failure
Risk factors for fulminant toxoplasmosis:
(1) HIV disease
(2) solid organ transplant
(3) failure to take prophylactic therapy
Fulminant disease may involve:
(1) the heart as myocarditis
(2) the lungs as pneumonitis
(3) the brain as encephalitis or meningoencephalitis
(4) the liver as hepatitis
(5) the eyes
(6) multiple organs as disseminated disease
