Fulminant hepatitis with acute liver failure can rarely occur in patients with dengue fever although biochemical evidence of hepatitis is relatively common. The prognosis is usually poor.
Clinical features:
(1) young age (<= 40 years)
(2) jaundice
(3) severe bleeding
(4) exclusion of other causes of fulminant hepatitis
Laboratory findings:
(1) ALT and AST > 10 times the upper limit of normal
(2) thrombocytopenia
Additional risk factors may include:
(1) alcohol abuse
