Description

An engine must have a certain quality of fuel to operate properly. Contaminated fuel can seriously damage an engine.


Types of fuel contamination:

(1) excess water

(2) micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi)

(3) mixture of gasoline and diesel fuel, or other petroleum products

(4) unwanted chemicals (surfactant, acid, etc)

(5) particulate material

 

Reasons for the contamination:

(1) human error

(2) leakage into storage tanks or distribution lines

(3) fraud

(4) sabotage (adding sugar to a gas tank is unlikely to cause engine damage)

(5) improper production

(6) letting an engine sit too long without use
