Description

A significant number of people are sensitive to one or more fragrances. The presence of fragrance sensitivity can pose a problem in places where people congregate such as in the classroom or at work.


Possible explanations for a claim of fragrance sensitivity:

(1) asthma

(2) allergy to one or more components of the fragrance

(3) osmophobia

(4) perception of the fragrance as unpleasant

(5) manipulative behavior (false)

 

Risk factors for a problem:

(1) poor ventilation in a closed space

(2) close proximity

(3) large number of people

(4) potent fragrance

(5) high temperature

(6) overapplication of the fragrance
