A full thickness burn of the skin that extends into deeper tissues is referred to as a fourth degree burn.
A fourth degree burn may involve:
(1) adipose tissue
(2) fascia
(3) muscle and/or tendon
(4) bone
(5) joint
(6) viscera (brain, etc)
Complications of a fourth degree burn may include:
(1) thrombosis
(2) amputation
(3) scarring and/or contractures
(4) infection
