Description

Foul play is behavior that violates rules of conduct in one or more dimensions. It can represent a serious hazard to other players. It can result in disciplinary action and even criminal charges.

Foul play:

(1) is deliberate, intentional or reckless (Grayson)

(2) is often done to improve the chances of winning rather than relying on merit

Since many rules in sports are made to protect players from injury, failing to observe them can result in unnecessary injuries.

Foul play may be intentional or a pattern of behavior indicating disregard for rules. This can be difficult to distinguish from an accident. This is why video recordings and a person's past record can be invaluable.
