Description

Yang et al reported a formula for estimating standard liver volume in a Korean adult based on simple body measurements. An accurate volume of the liver is important to determine for liver transplantation. The authors are from Handong Global University and Jeonbuk National University in South Korea,

Parameters:

(1) body weight in kilograms

(2) thoracic width in cm (distance from left to right costophrenic angle in AP image)

(3) liver height in mm (differences between the z-coordinates of the top and bottom CT images containing liver, Figure 2)

Parameter

Points

body weight

9.85 * (weight

thoracic width

19.85 * (width)

liver height

7.401 * (height)

estimated standard liver volume in mL =

= SUM(points for all of the parameters) - 1,275

The authors suggest that the equation may be suitable for Asian populations.
