Formula of Owens et al for Predicting Normal Glenoid Bone Width from the Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) of the Affected Shoulder

Description

Owens et al reported an equation for predicting the normal glenoid bone width from the MRI of the affected shoulder. This method does not require an MRI of the opposite shoulder for reference. The authors are from Keller Army Hospital and U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

predicted glenoid width in a male in mm =

= (0.333 * (glenoid height in mm)) + 15

 

predicted glenoid width in a female in mm =

= (0.333 * (glenoid height in mm)) + 13

 

estimated mm bone loss =

= (predicted) - (measured)

 

estimated bone loss in percent =

= (bone loss) / (predicted) * 100%
