Description

Keys developed an equation for calculating the oncotic pressure in serum associated with serum proteins.

Parameters:

(1) serum albumin concentration in g/dL

(2) serum total globulin concentration in g/dL

(3) temperature in °K (°C + 273.16)

(4) factor

Total Protein in g/dL

This can be approximated as:

Total Protein

Value of f

1 to 4

(0.002143 * ((protein)^2)) + (0.04014 * (protein)) + 0.836

4 to 8

(0.01786 * ((protein)^2)) - (0.1113 * (protein)) + 1.193

oncotic pressure in mm H2O =

= (factor) * ((45.2 * (albumin concentration)) + (18.86 * (globulin concentration)) * (temperature) / 273.16

Interpretation:

• The normal oncotic pressure is 28 to 48 cm water (20.6 to 35.3 mm Hg)
