Duprez et al reported a formula for calculating the fraction of delivered oxygen during low-flow oxygen therapy. The authors are from Hopital Epicura, Universite Catholique de Louvain, and the University of Mons.
Patient selection: mechanical ventilation with low-flow oxygen therapy
Parameters:
(1) oxygen flow in liters per minute
(2) minute ventilation in liters per minute
(3) ratio of inspiratory time to total respiratory time (inspiratory + expiratory times)
Allowed ratios for inspiratory time to total respiratory time: 0.33 and 0.50
Ratio of Inspiratory Tme to Total Respiratory Time
Factor
0.33
1 / (4 * (minute ventilation))
0.50
1 / (2.5 * (minute ventilation))
fractional delivery of oxygen as a decimal fraction =
= 0.21 + ((factor) * (oxygen flow))
