Ahmadi et al reported a formula for estimating serum LDL-cholesterol. The authors are from the University of Tehran.
Parameters:
(1) serum total cholesterol in mg/dL
(2) serum HDL cholesterol in mg/dL
(3) serum triglycerides in mg/dL
Parameter
Points
serum total cholesterol
(TC) / 1.19
serum HDL cholesterol
(-1) * (HDLC) / 1.1
serum triglycerides
(triglycerides) / 1.9
where:
• 1 / 1.19 = 0.84
• 1 / 1.1 = 0.909
• 1 / 1.9 = 0.526
estimated LDL cholesterol in mg/dL =
= SUM(points for all of the parameters) - 38
NOTE: The equations may only be suitable for low serum triglyceride concentrations. Above a serum triglyceride concentration of 190 mg/dL the serum LDL-cholesterol estimate exceeds serum total cholesterol. The subjects had a serum total cholesterol > 250 mg/dL and 50% had a serum triglyceride concentration less than 100 mg/dL
