A diabetic with polyneuropathy and poor circulation of the feet is at risk for burns when while on vacation or at the beach.
The patient may not be aware of early signs of injury. Burns may take longer to heal and may be at greater risk for complications.
Hazards:
(1) sunburn
(2) walking on hot pavement or sand
Risk factors:
(1) loss of sensation on the feet
(2) lack of shoes or sandles (walking barefoot)
(3) wet skin (conducts heat better)
(4) failing to monitor feet (frequently checking)
(5) intoxication
