Description

Rice can be a cause of the Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES). Rice may not considered as a culprit since it is often recommended for people with celiac disease.

Features of rice-associated FPIES:

(1) The patient has evidence of food allergy, which may include anaphylaxis.

(2) The patient often has allergies to multiple foods.

(3) Episodes of food allergy occur after eating rice.

(4) Elimination of rice and rice proteins from the diet results in clinical improvement.

Laboratory evidence of allergy to rice allergens supports the diagnosis.

Identification by food elimination can be a challenge if rice is not eliminated or when the patient has multiple food allergies.
