Description

Several complications following placement of transvaginal mesh have been reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These have resulted in a variety of restrictions and the need for additional surrveillance efforts.


Adverse effects reported for transvaginal mesh:

(1) erosion with or without fistula formation

(2) pain

(3) infection

(4) bleeding (hemorrhage, hematoma)

(5) dyspareunia

(6) organ perforation

(7) urinary tract problems

(8) neuromuscular problem

(9) vaginal scarring

(10) recurrent prolapse

 

Sites of mesh erosion may include:

(1) into vagina

(2) into urinary bladder

(3) into rectum
