Description

Watermelons contain sugars, so are attractive to all sorts of watermelons. If the rind of the watermelon is breeched for any reason, then bacteria and fungi can ferment within.

Presentation: watermelon that is "foaming" or which explodes

Process: proliferation of microorganisms with release of gases

The fermentation process increases in hot weather.

Proliferation of microorganisms can also occur if the watermelon is not refrigerated after it has been opened.

Other findings may include:

(1) a foul odor

(2) a change in external consistency (and no longer firm)

(3) a change in the texture of contents.

These are signs that the watermelon is rotting and not suitable for human consumption.
