Description

The DNA index reflects the DNA content of a tumor cell population relative to that of normal cells.

DNA index =

= (relative DNA of tumor cell peak) / (relative DNA content of normal, diploid cells)

Interpretation:

• normal cells contain twice the haploid content of DNA and are termed diploid

• an abnormal, non-diploid DNA content is termed aneuploid

• if the tumor cells contain less DNA than diploid cells, they are termed hypoploid

• if the tumor cells contain more DNA than diploid cells, they are termed hyperploid

• if the tumor has twice the DNA of a diploid cell, then it is termed tetraploid

• if the tumor has four times the DNA of a diploid cell, then it is termed octaploid
