Description

The flagger at a road construction site has a hazardous job.


Hazards: being struck be moving vehicles or construction equipment

 

Risk factors for injury:

(1) excessive speed

(2) impaired or distracted driver

(3) angry or aggressive driver

(4) poor visibility

(5) impaired or distracted flagger

 

Ways to reduce flagger injury:

(1) protection of a barrier if possible

(2) high visibility clothing

(3) proper training

(4) appropriate clothing for expected weather

(5) stand in an appropriate location (on shoulder in clear view), not in an open traffic lane

(6) have an escape route for emergencies

(7) be clearly visible in all conditions

(8) be in communication with other flaggers

(9) reduce and enforce traffic speed in construction zone
