Electronic cigarettes have been linked to fires and explosions. This is why they are banned in checked luggage on airplanes and other forms of transportation.
Sources of fire:
(1) rechargeable lithium battery
(2) heating element
(3) recharger
Risk factors for fire:
(1) accidental activation, especially when packed for traveling
(2) recharging, especially when using the wrong charger or a USB connection not designed for cigarette
(3) physical damage to the device
(4) nearby combustibles such as oxygen
(5) home-made device
(6) overheating the lithium battery
