Description

The Katz hand diagram allows the patient to mark the location of signs and symptoms in an affected hand. Certain patterns are seen in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and some are not.


 

Parameters:

(1) numbness, pain, tingling and/or decreased sensation in the thumb

(2) numbness, pain, tingling and/or decreased sensation in the index finger

(3) numbness, pain, tingling and/or decreased sensation in the middle finger

(4) numbness, pain, tingling and/or decreased sensation in the fourth finger

(5) numbness, pain, tingling and/or decreased sensation in the fifth finger

(6) numbness, pain, tingling and/or decreased sensation in the thenar aspect of the palm

(7) numbness, pain, tingling and/or decreased sensation in the hypothenar aspect of the palm

(8) numbness, pain, tingling and/or decreased sensation over the dorsum of the hand

(9) wrist pain

(10) pain radiating up the ventral arm

 

Classic Pattern:

(1) symptoms in 2 or all 3 of fingers 1, 2 and 3

(2) with or without:

(2a) symptoms in fingers 4 or 5

(2b) pain in the wrist

(2c) pain radiating up the arm

 

Probable Pattern:

(1) classic pattern plus symptoms over whole palm or over thenar palm (but not over only the hypothenar palm)

 

Possible Pattern:

(1) symptoms only in thumb

(2) symptoms only in finger 2

(3) symptoms only in finger 3

 

Unlikely Pattern:

(1) absence of symptoms in fingers 1, 2 and 3

(2) symptoms in fingers 4 and/or 5 only

(3) symptoms over the dorsum of the hand

(4) symptoms involving the hypothenar palm only
