Alkindi et al identified findings associated with priapism in males with sickle cell disease. The author are from Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman.
Patient selection: male with sickle cell anemia
Clinical findings associated with priapism:
(1) history of acute chest syndrome
(2) history of stroke
(3) pulmonary hypertension
(4) asplenia
(5) gallstones (with or without cholecystectomy)
The presence of thalassemia may be protective.
Laboratory findings associated with priapism:
(1) anemia (low hemoglobin)
(2) elevated white blood cell count
(3) elevated platelet count
(4) elevated reticulocyte count
(5) elevated MCV
(6) elevated MCH
(7) elevated serum LDH
(8) elevated serum total bilirubin
Several of the laboratory findings suggest recent hemolysis.
Priapism was complicated by impotence and infertility.
