Description

Filariasis may present as a subcutaneous mass or abscess. The diagnosis may be unexpected in a patient not previously diagnosed with filariasis.


Presentation:

(1) fluctuant mass in a febrile patient

(2) soft tissue mass (possible lipoma)

 

Aspiration shows inflammation and filaria, including gravid adults.

 

Culture of the aspirate fluid may show bacteria or may be sterile.
