In private feuds the behavior may not always be reciprocated (one-sided).

The goal is to retaliate for, or to take of vengeance for:

(1) an insult, slight or other sign of disrespect

(2) murder or injury

(3) other perceived wrong

The cause may or may not be legitimate.

Underlying foundation:

(1) the need to protect honor or prestige

(2) blood relations and kinship

The taking of vengeance is considered a sacred duty. Failure to exact revenge results in a loss of honor and prestige.
