Afreen et al correlated the fetal lung volume to head ratio (TVHR) with respiratory distress in preterm neonates. This is a measure of pulmonary hypoplasia. The authors are from Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi.
Patient selection: fetus between 30 and 34 weeks of gestation
Parameters measured within 72 hours of delivery:
(1) fetal total lung volume in cubic mm
(2) head circumference in mm
lung volume to head ratio = LVHR =
= (total lung area) / head circumference
Alternative ratios included
(1) total lung area to head circumference ratio
(2) lung diameter to head circumference ratio
Interpretation:
• A TLVR < 46.5 was associated with respiratory distress.
