Features of nanophthalmos:
(1) The condition is usually bilateral.
(2) The eyes are small.
(3) The globe shows a reduced axial length.
(4) There is high hyperipia (from +7 to +13 diopters).
(5) The lens to eye volume ratio is high (indicating that the lens is not as severely affected).
(6) There is a high incidence of angle closure glaucoma.
(7) The eye shows yellow pigmentation of the macule, a crowded optic disc and chorioretinal folds.
Nanophthalmos may occur:
(1) as a sporadic condition
(2) as an autosomal dominant condition
(3) as an autosomal recessive condition
(4) together with other congenital abnormalities
