Farms have many hazards. A play area on a farm may be unsafe if a careful evaluation is not performed.
Unsafe play areas:
(1) on or near driveways or machinery pathways without a proper barrier
(2) on or around tractors or farm equipment
(3) on or around large livestock
(4) too close to a workshop or barn with dust, noise or other environmental hazards
(5) too close to water hazard (pond, canal, drainage ditch, river, etc.)
(6) too close to animal waste
(7) too close to chemical storage or fields where chemicals have been sprayed
(8) too close to fuel storage areas
(9) in storage buildings such as silos, barns or grain bins
Unsafe play equipment:
(1) not properly anchored or secured to prevent tip-over
(2) inadequate ground surfacing to cushion falls
(3) worn, weathered or poorly maintained
(4) projecting parts
(5) ropes or other potential hanging hazards
(6) openings large enough to trap a child's head
(7) misused or incorrectly used
(8) agricultural equipment or workshop tools not designed for play
Unsafe supervision:
(1) poor visibility of play area
(2) multi-tasking or distractions
