Description

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy can affect newborn infants and can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Based upon the clinical evaluation after the first week it is possible to assess the severity of the encephalopathy and to determine the likely prognosis. The acronym FATES (feeding, Apgar, tone, extubation, seizures) is used for a scoring system.

Clinical Information evaluated:

(1) Apgar scores at birth

(2) feeding

(3) muscle tone

(4) need for respiratory support

(5) seizure activity
