Varicose veins can be traumatized and this can result in lethal hemorrhage.
Risk factors for trauma to and hemorrhage from varicose veins:
(1) large and tortuous veins close to the skin surface
(2) anticoagulation
(3) coagulopathy
(4) attack by an animal (cat, chicken, etc)
(5) other penetrating trauma to the lower leg
(6) intoxication
(7) peripheral neuropathy
(8) senile skin fragility
