Mnemonics are convenient ways to remember things, similar to a checklist. The FASTHUG mnemonic is a rapid screen for care in the intensive care unit (ICU). MAIDENS was added by Mabasa et al to identify drug-related problems.
F: feeding
A: analgesia
S: sedation
T: thromboembolic prophylaxis
H: head of bed elevation
H: hypoactive or hyperactive delirium (modification from MAIDENS)
U: stress ulcer prophylaxis
G: glucose control
M: medication reconciliation
A: antibiotics and anti-infectives
I: indications for medications
D: drug dosing
E: electrolytes and other laboratory tests
N: no drug interactions, allergies, duplication or side effects
S: stop dates
The use of the mnemonic helped to identify problems and to improve care.
