Description

Dellas et al developed the FAST score for evaluation of a patient with an acute pulmonary embolism. This can help to identify a patient who may be at risk for complications within the next 30 days. The authors are from Georg August University of Gottingen.

Patient selection: normotensive after pulmonary embolism

Outcome: 30-day complications (need for pressor therapy, mechanical ventilation, and/or cardiopulmonary resuscitation)

Parameters:

(1) H-FABP (heart-type fatty acid binding protein) concentration in ng/mL

(2) syncope

(3) heart rate in beats per minute

< 6 ng/mL

>= 6 ng/m:

heart rate

<= 110 beats per minute

0

> 110 beats per minute (tachycardia)

= SUM(points for all 3 paramters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 5

• A score >= 3 was associated with 30-day complications.

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve is reported as 0.86.
