Description

Myeloma and other plasma cell disorders can occur in family members.


 

Features of familial myeloma:

(1) plasma cell disorder(s)

(2) involves first-degree relatives

(3) susceptibility to other neoplasms

 

Plasma cell disorders may include:

(1) myeloma

(2) MGUS (monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance)

(3) amyloidosis

 

A plasma cell neoplasm should be evaluated for chromosomal abnormalities. Patients and family members should be tested for serum light chains.

 

Neoplasms associated with familial myeloma:

(1) non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

(2) Hodgkin’s lymphoma

(3) chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)

(4) myeloproliferative disorder

(5) prostate or female genital cancer

(6) breast cancer

(7) gastrointestinal carcinoma

(8) melanoma

(9) other

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) amyloidosis associated with hereditary inflammatory disorder
