Description

A laboratory test that uses latex particles may show a falsely elevated resulted in patients with a monoclonal gammopathy.

Mechanism: The paraprotein coats the latex particles, causing them to aggregate.

Features of the interference:

(1) The patient has a monoclonal protein.

(2) A laboratory test that uses latex particles is positive or shows an elevated value.

(3) A repeat test shows a much lower value if (a) the paraprotein is removed or (b) a method is used that does not have latex particles.

Tests affected may include: C-reactive protein (CRP), serum ferritin, anti-streptolysin O titer

If removal of the paraprotein is used, it is important that the method used does not remove the target analyte.
