Description

Several tests are available for detecting rupture of the fetal membranes. While superior to older tests there is still the risk of false positive or negative results.

Causes of a false positive:

(1) blood

(2) failure to follow manufacturer's instructions precisely

(3) interfering substances (baby oil, lubricant, creams, etc)

(4) vaginal manipulation

(5) late gestation (> 34 weeks)

Causes of a false negative:

(1) occlusion of a minor tear (overlying fetus, resealing, etc)

(2) failure to follow manufacturer's instructions precisely

(3) interfering substances (baby oil, lubricant, creams, etc)
