Description

Rarely a tumor may release enough HCG to cause a false-positive pregnancy test.


Tumors that may secrete HCG:

(1) gonadoblastoma

(2) gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma

(3) teratocarcinoma

(4) leiomyosarcoma

(5) lung adenocarcinoma

 

Clinical features:

(1) persistently positive pregnancy test

(2) presence of an underlying neoplasm

(3) no evidence of pregnancy on ultrasound

(4) serum sample positive for HCG

(5) negative pregnancy test after removal or successful treatment of tumor
