Heterophile antibodies can cause a false elevation of plasma D-dimer concentrations.
Clinical features:
(1) elevated plasma D-dimer concentration
(2) no clinical evidence of DIC, thrombosis or other cause for D-dimer elevation
(3) markedly reduced plasma D-dimer concentration after anti-heterophile antibody pretreatment or with alternative testing
(4) no evidence of HAMA or other human anti-animal antibodies
(5) no other explanation found
