An infusion of iron sucrose may cause a falsely elevated D-dimer result. This can result in unnecessary testing for the patient.
Patient selection: infusion of iron sucrose
Clinical features:
(1) The patient shows an elevation or rise in D-dimer after the infusion.
(2) The patient is hemodynamically stable.
(3) There is no clinical evidence of thrombosis or emboli.
(4) No other explanation for an elevated D-dimer is seen.
