Description

Smokers with high level nicotine dependence can be identified using the Fagerstrom test.

The instrument consists of 6 questions related to cigarette smoking:

(1) time to first cigarette after waking up

(2) difficult not smoking in a place where it is forbidden

(3) favorite cigarette (one you would hate to give up)

(4) cigarettes smoked per day

(5) smoke more in first hour after waking up than later

(6) smoke even if sick in bed

nicotine dependence score =

= SUM(points for the 6 questions)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 10

• A score > 6 indicates a high degree of nicotine dependence and is associated with more severe withdrawal symptoms, greater difficulty in quitting, and possibly the need for a higher dose of nicotine in smoking cessation materials.
