Description

Staud et al evaluated factors predictive of pain intensity in patients with fibromyalgia. These can be used to help guide management of these patients. The authors are from the University of Florida at Gainseville.

Patient selection: fibromyalgia

Factors associated with pain intensity:

(1) sum of local areas of pain (SLAP) on the whole body diagram

(2) tender point count (TPCA)

(3) pain-related negative affect (PRNA)

(4) magnitude of wind-up after-sensations (duration and intensity after wind-up physical stimuli)

Other factors that may impact pain intensity:

(1) stress

(2) autonomic and/or neurologic dysfunction
