Description

The management of a pediatric patient with a hydrocele may be determined a number of factors. The authors are from Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital and Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm.


 

Patient selection: infant or child with a hydrocele

 

Approximately 90% of hydroceles identified in an infant will resolve spontaneously as a patent processus vaginalis becomes obliterated.

 

Hydroceles that may require surgical intervention:

(1) huge size

(2) accompanied by an inguinal hernia

(3) testicular torsion

(4) significant discomfort
