Description

Maestre identified factors predictive of diastolic heart failure in a patient admitted to the hospital for heart failure. These can help to guide the subsequent workup. The authors are from Hospital General Universitario de Elche and Universidad Miguel Hernandez in Spain.

Patient selection: patient admitted to the hospital with heart failure

Predictors of diastolic dysfunction (odd ratios 3.5 to 4.0)"

(1) female gender

(2) left ventricular hypertrophy on echocardiography

(3) absence of coronary artery disease

The chances of diastolic heart failure increase with the number of predictors present.
