Description

Patients with dengue fever may have a marked deterioration in their quality of life during the acute infection with a gradual return towards normal during the recuperation phase. Lum et al identified some of the major areas affected. The authors are from the University of Malaya and Brandeis University.


 

Patient selection: dengue fever

 

The lowest level in the quality of life is usually 2 to 6 days after symptom onset.

 

The more severe the infection the greater the drop in the quality of life and the slower the return to normal function.

 

Symptoms:

(1) pain and aches (dengue is sometimes called breakbone fever from the intense bone pain)

(2) malaise and feeling bad

(3) gastrointestinal complaints (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc)

(4) anxiety, depression and other psychiatric complaints

 

Functional disabilities

(1) impaired cognition

(2) impaired relationships with others

(3) impaired mobility

(4) impaired sleep

(5) inability to perform usual activities

(6) impaired activities of daily living and self-care
